At the European Cup 10 km Championships held for the first time in GB, organised at Highgate by Ben Pochee and assisted by Ben Noad, 20 year old Alex Yee ran a superbly judged race to come home in 5th place in the A race and be the first GB athlete home.
Obviously nervous before the start he then calmed himself down before embarking on his first race representing GB Seniors. He settled in 11th place in a leading group of 18 and then steadily chalked off the laps managing to stay focused and calm. Meanwhile Alex Vernon and Chris Thompson had liased together and were setting the pace at 27 min 40 secs. Lap after lap slowly took their toll but the lead group was hanging in well on a superbly calm night with the crowd really behind the runners and Alex in particular. At 9:30 pm on a still evening the noise was incredible and the atmosphere superb – as the runners only had 3 lanes to run in as the crowd were allowed onto the track. The pace was relentlessly consistent at 67 secs per lap yet by halfway the lead group was still 14 runners with Alex in 10th place but only 10 m behind the leaders. The race slowly developed as lap after lap unwound and the noise and support for Alex grew – lead noisily by the large contingent of Kent AC supporters on the final bend of the track who were leading the proceedings.
At about 7km small gaps started to appear yet Alex was on the case and each time a small gap appeared in front he overtook the ailing runner to ensure that he was in contention. By now Alex Vernon and Chris Thompson had been passed and Alex was in 5th place. As the gaps widened Alex was really giving it a go and despite the tiredness was not slowing. Only into the last kilometre was there any indication of him slowing but his mind set was still superb and he only had to hang on to gain a superb result. He was well clear in 5th place but then Vernon and Thompson started to work together swopping places with 300 m to go. Alex did not realise until 100 m to go but then dug incredibly deep to hold them off and secure his guaranteed place in the GB team for the European Champs in August. A superb time of 27 mins 51 secs was his just reward – the second fastest time by a 20 year old ever in Europe.
The crowd were going wild at this point and invaded the finish area but I’m not sure Alex knew much about it – such had been his effort.
This race had been superbly organised by Ben Pochee in particular and now it’s in its 5th year is well established in the European calender – such was the atmosphere that European Athletes have asked him to put on the European 10000 km Champs at Highgate for the next 3 years !
At this huge festival of running with a crowd of 7000 persons – with free admission – it is an event not to be missed as it is by far the best organised event in Europe with an atmosphere second to none !
Not to be outdone we had Chris Greenwood in one of the earlier races in this 8 hour festival of running. He ran really well and was rewarded with one of his best times, 30 mins 58 secs, despite having to battle with the heat early on in the day.
Second place for Kent AC today behind a very strong Bexley team. We’ve now lost out twice to teams relegated last year from higher divisions. Our points total of over 200 would have been enough to win some matches, so nothing to be upset about. No doubt inspired by Dave Morgan’s rallying cry, our women’s team turned out in force, very nearly outscoring our men…
I’m still excited by our promotion prospects. If we win our next three fixtures we’ll definitely be in the mix!
Highlights as follows:
19 points from 7 events from Shaun Mulligan including a new Javelin PB for the experienced multi-eventer.
17 points from 5 events from Isabel Bradley, including jumps that were long, high, triple and over barriers and hurdles.
Sally Lawrence seemed to enjoy dashing around jumping and throwing things and she scored 15 points.
It was good to see sprinter Max Harbord back in the SAL, 12 points for 4 second places for him in the 100m, 200m and long and triple jumps.
Victoria Buck won all her races: 400m, 800m and 1,500m.
Throwing specialists Courtney Green, Alinda Haynes-Hunte and Tracey Griffiths scored 24 points between them. Courtney’s 11.94 in the shot was our joint highest ranked performance of the day.
Calum continues to suggest he’s not really a long distance runner, showing skills in the hammer, high jump and 400m and 1,500m.
Dame Dibaba showed his growing maturity as a racer running a pb of 4.17 in the 1,500m. For some reason his captain only put him in as a non-scorer today, perhaps the balance of his mind had been disturbed by a long session at Highgate.
Emma-Louise Wagstaff and Shamariah Notice provided some class in our female sprinting. Katie Rowland turned out to be pretty good at the 100m and very good at the 5,000m (her 18:44 our joint highest ranked performance).
Ian ‘Ninja’ Ellwood ran a pb in the steeplechase and made a remarkably smooth debut in the 110m hurdles. Neil Philips won the steeplechase b string.
Sarah Hanley power through in the 800m and then unexpectedly ran 5,000m.
Tim Alexander beat Tim Lawrence in the 800m for Tims.
Luke Sargeant showed impressive pace in the 100m and 200m and JC Roghi ran 3 *400m off ~90 mins sunbathing.
Loads more brilliant performances from Teresa Murphy, Glenn Gray, Dan Ansell, Sean Fitzpatrick, Kehinde Dauda.
Next match at Tooting on 23 June, where we’ve got to beat Cambridge Harriers!

Here are a couple of videos made at the old Men’s Southern League back in May 2011.At the same venue but a grey and chilly day. On that occasion!. the photographer sneaked away during the 5000 meters and took a stroll along the beautiful Thames riverside.
A great start to the year where despite a small team of only 15 athletes all of whom performed well, avoided injuries, and pushed us to a team result of a good 5th place. It was a warm day at Yeovil and the meeting was a well organised one with all the team up for the fight and all there on time.
We started well with Nathan Brown coming home in 3rd place in a highly competitive A 100 m race with great backing from new recruit Gift McLaren who did well by coming home in 4th pace in the B 100 m. They repeated their good runs by finishing in the same positions in the 200 m. Next up was our the ever reliable Ben Harding who did well in the A 800 m as he was just edged into 2nd place in a competitive race. Another new recruit Dan Pettit then gave it his all but faded to 7th place in a very good standard B race – yet he was rewarded with a PB and valuable experience. Both did the 1500 m later on to show their real commitment to the cause and Dan was rewarded with a good 5th place which bodes well for the future.
One of our stalwarts, Chris Greenwood, was next up where he also gave the race a real go but was just edged into 2nd place in the 3000 m steeplechase and he assures us that he will be doing some hurdling practice before the next match ! Neil Phillips then got us solid points in the B race before showing us his throwing exploits in the Javelin – all with the London Marathon still in his legs.
Team Captain, Joe Appiah, then lead from the front as he recorded a fine 2nd place in the A 110 m Hurdles with fine hurdling in a good time of 15.93 secs and he had great backing up from Ethelbert Metzger who came 3rd in the B race in a excellent PB time of 17.85 secs.
Sean Breathnach who showed us all what commitment is by traveling over from Galway on the west coast of Ireland then did well by first of all coming 2nd in the A Discus with a throw of 45.27 m before going one better by getting 1st pace in the A Shot with a throw of 17.08 m – all of which were achieved with heavy training in his legs ! Our other stalwart in the throws, Courtney Green, then had some solid throws of 11.97 m in the shot and 32.45 m in the discus to earn good 4th places in both the B strings. He now assures me that he is about to start training solidly !
The 400 m then produced some excellent results as Shawn Wright, who is now working in London, came home 4th in the A 400 m in a good standard race – an excellent run given his injury woes this winter which promises well for the future. Another new recruit, Reece Dimesh, then delivered only our second win of the day as he ran a well judged race in 50.46 secs – a great start to a season that promises to be a revelation for him now that he is training with Jack Green.
We also had some good runs in the 3000 m where Jordan Weaver ran an astute race and got us 5th place in a PB time of 8min 48secs backed up well by Chris Greenwood who earnt us 3rd place in the B race.
We had superb backing up, what with our small numbers, from Max Harbord who filled no less than 5 events, most of which were new to him, as he helped earn no less than 26 points on the day !!! He was backed up well by Joe Appiah who also did 5 events and earned us a total of 34 points – a great display by both of them that really helped the team out big time.
Last up, was the Relays, where our new recruits were added to by George Huxley in the 4 x 100 m as he showed us his talent with a great opening leg, then super changes from Gift and Max as Nathan then lead them to glory to seal a fine win. Great handover practice from Joe Appiah obviously paid off !
The 4 x 400 m was another great relay for us to seal a good day as Shawn, Gift, Nathan and Reece performed really well to seal a super 2nd place on a good day for Kent AC.

British League Division 2 at Yeovil on Sat 5th May 2018
Division 3SE of the Southern Athletics League is a difficult division to get out of. There are 16 teams, all dreaming of the glory that comes with finishing in the top two promotion places. It’s not easy to do that, last year you could afford to only drop one point all season.
So last season, although we didn’t know it at the time, our promotion push was effectively ended on day one; a cold, miserable April day in Carshalton when we came 3rd in our first fixture.
This season we started off on a cold, miserable day April day in Carshalton with probably our toughest fixture against two strong teams: recently relegated Herne Hill Harriers and Surrey-based rivals Hercules Wimbledon, and also Medway Phoenix.
The dream is still alive! Our athletes finished a creditable second on the day beating Hercules into third. We might end up needing to win all of the remaining fixtures, but our team will get stronger throughout the season so there’s plenty of hope that we’re capable of that. Next fixture is at Erith on Sunday 20th May vs Bexley, Swale and Lewes & Hayward Heath.
There were loads of great performances on Saturday, here’s a few highlights:
Shaun Mulligan did his own version of a decathlon (400mH, Hammer, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 110mH, Discus, High Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Putt). He scored a remarkable 33 points (it’s 4 points for a win, 3 for second etc.)
Calum Fraser, who had done a track session at Ladywell on the way to the fixture, won the high jump and the 400m hurdles and did the 400m and the 400m relay. Ben Harding had also done a track session but also won the 800m easily.
Isabel Bradley was top scorer for the women showing skills in the long jump, 100m, 400mh and the 800m.
Throw specialists Tracey Griffiths and Courtney Green both scored well and were joined by a new thrower Alinda Haynes-Hunte who won the B string discuss on debut. Veteran 400m runner James Opio made his debut at the Hammer with a 6.27m effort, enough for 2nd place.
The men’s 5,000m had some fast times. We saw a superb early season PB for Dan Pettitt (15:49) and a weight-adjusted PB from Anthony Johnson (16:03), helped by Dave Morgan (15:47). Friend of the club and spotted Bengal cat enthusiast Jack Brotchie got a massive PB (15:53).
Alexa Parker smashed the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m without seeming to get tired at all. Herne Hill Harriers middle distance women’s group is very strong but even they couldn’t cope with the pace of Sarah Hanley in the 3,000m and 1,500m.
It wasn’t good weather for sprinting but that didn’t bother Juno’s group: Nathan Brown was as classy as ever but he was closely run in the 100m by the improving Israel Ajala.
As always, the steeplechase was entertaining, at least for those watching. Dame submerged himself in deep water with four different unsuccessful water jump techniques, then on the final lap unleashed a massive jump clearing the barrier and most of the water and celebrated with a fist pump. Ian Ellwood and Dan Ansell also contributed valuable points and entertainment. Thank you.
A big thank you to the volunteers: Ann Boxshall for doing the scoring, Ed & Annabelle, Norman and Rob for organising and measuring various jumps. Thanks also to Annabelle for scoring valuable points in the 3,000m.
