British League Div 2 – match 2 at Yate, near Bristol
on Sat 3rd June 2017
A great result for a real team that were always supportive of each other and who filled in where necessary on behalf of the club in order to gain us 2nd place in the match and move us up to equal 1st in the league.
Yate is bit of a one horse town which has one train an hour and is in the middle of nowhere about 15 miles north of Bristol. We had an interesting journey there by train with the train, packed with Juventus supporters on their way to Cardiff for the Champions League final, with seats at a premium but at least the journey was only 1 hour 15 mins before we got a local train to Yate.
Spirits were high and we scored surprisingly good points in the Long Jump through team captain Joe Appiah and Rawlston Morian who finished in 5th and 7th places respectively. More good points then came in the Pole Vault with Ed Borrman who came 6th in the A competition and Stuart Chisholm who came 4th in the B section. Next up was Joe Appiah and Rawlston Morian again who then secured more valuable points in the High Jump as they jumped 1.70 m and 1.60 m to earn us 8 points in all. We just filled in at the Hammer so with 4 out of our weakest 6 events out of the way early on we knew that we could only get stronger.
Good runs in the 400 m Hurdles was next up and stalwart Shaun Mulligan used his limited fitness together with his undoubted talent to secure 5th place in the a race and Jean Charles Roghi also used his experience to secure 4th place in the B section. Next up was our USA export, Owen Hind, who battled really hard to secure 4th place in the A 800m race, despite being used to 10, 000 m races in the states, who ran a respectable 1 min 58 secs.
Next up was one of our stars, HCA David Lima, who ran really well to secure an easy win in a season’s best time of 10.35 secs in the A 100 m and who had superb backing up from new boy to the team, Ladywell based Nathan Brown, who ran a well judged B race as he secured a notable win ! At the same time one of our Irish imports Sean Breathnach was throwing in the Discus (with bit of a problem) yet he secured a fine 2nd place in the A section and was only 3cm away from the win.
Then came the 3000 m Steeplechase as Ladywell boys ran well as they secured 22 pts out of 28 pts with 4th in the A section and a fine win respectively in the B section. Next up was the 110 m Hurdles and they did not disappoint as Joe Appiah had his best hurdles for a few years as he came home in 2nd place in the A race in 15.68 secs and stalwart Ethelbert Metzger came home in 4th place in the B race in 18.08 secs – hopefully he can get more regular training to bring his time down to 16 secs.
Next up in the triple jump was our Edinburgh based athlete, Chuxx Onyia, who had a nightmare journey with his plane being delayed by over 4 hours and what with a rushed taxi ride to the track he arrived just in time to do a jump in the second round – needless to say it was a narrow foul. Yet he used all his experience to go straight into the lead with his next jump ! We had minders all around the track as we awaited his arrival yet despite our concerns he delivered the goods and he went onto secure the A win with a jump of 14.94 m. Not to be outdone our B string, David Wellstead, who amongst other duties marked out Chuxx’s run up before his arrival proved what a great team man he is as he jumped well securing maximum points with a jump of 13.22 m in the B section.
More valuable points were gained as David Lima ran a superb A string 200 m as he came of the bend in real style, despite the handicap of lane 1, and won the A event comfortably in a great time of 20.83 secs.
The 1500m was next up and Owen Hind then ran well just being edged out in a tight finish yet earned great points with his 3rd place in the A race as Neil Phillips worked his way through the field securing 5th place in the B section despite having problems with the high pollen count which meant that he ran ’blind’.
In the Javelin we were also earning great points as our other Irish athlete Rory Gunning earned us valuable points as he threw 59.65 m to get 2nd place in the A section. Next to perform were the 5000m guys and Chris Greenwood and Jordan Weaver were right in the mix as the group whittled down to just 5 runners and with a spectacular finish Jordan just got past Chris to earn themselves 3rd in the A race and a Win in the B race.
The last field event of the day did not disappoint as Sean Breathnach yet again secured a fine win in the A competition with a best of 16.34 m to demonstrate what a superb member of the team he has been over the years and he was backed up well by Ladywell based Courtney Green who came 2nd in the B section with a throw of 12.79m.
Last up were the relays where we secured more valuable points as we came 3rd in the 4 x 100 m and came 7th in the 4 x 400 m with a scratch team of Rawlston, Jean Charles, Ron and Shaun. It must be mentioned that these guys really did help the team big time as they filled in events all day and secured no less than a total of 17 points. This was to prove vital for the club as when the results were finally published we had secured 2nd place only 5 points away from winning the match yet only 15 points away from being in 5th place – the margins are really tight !
So we go into the last 2 matches joint top of the table and with it all to play for if we are to be promoted but one way or another today was an excellent day for Kent AC.
