VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL THERAPIST
Our new BTEC Level 5 qualification is the highest in the UKCourses in London & Southampton
The London School of Sports Massage was founded in 1989 and was the first to provide specialist training in Sport & Remedial Massage. It has remained a pioneer and leader in the field of massage and has done much to establish what has now become a well-recognised discipline in modern healthcare.
The School offers vocational training for those who want to develop a professional career in massage therapy and we do this by understanding the real needs of the people we treat. Our management and staff are all motivated by their passion of Sport & Remedial massage and our tutors are hands-on working therapists who are reminded daily of what it really takes to succeed in clinical practice.
Although many of us may aspire to work with Elite athletes there are not enough of them for us all to make our living that way. To survive financially most of us spend the majority of our time treating ordinary members of the public who suffer with a wide variety of acute and chronic aches and pains. Remedial massage is used to try to remedy these problems. Many of our clients are also recreational or competitive athletes as well as having a job and other lifestyle stresses, so Sports massage is just a speciality within this wider discipline of Remedial massage.
.The LSSM has been instrumental in setting up the Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage ISRM which is the professional body promoting our needs and aspirations as professional clinical therapists. The LSSM qualification is now the ISRM qualification and this allows other independent schools to offer the same high level of training and unite us all under this single qualification. The ISRM qualification is externally validated by Edexcel/BTEC which is the National awarding body for professional education and training in the UK, and our graduates receive:
BTEC Professional Diploma in Clinical Sport & Remedial Massage (Level 5)
And
LSSM Diploma in Sport & Remedial MassageGraduates can become full members of the ISRM which has an online register of therapists and a Continual Professional Development programme, plus all the necessary professional support a therapists needs, such as insurance etc. (see www.theisrm.com)

Regulatory Body for Complementary Healthcare. (December 2006)
The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health (FIH) has a mandate to establish a self-regulatory body for Complementary Healthcare. As the representative of the massage profession the General Council of Massage Therapy (GCMT) is on the FIH working group which is developing the structure for what should become a National Register covering all the different disciplines within Complementary medicine. ISRM is on the GCMT council where we are able to take an active role during this very significant decision making period.Sports Massage: Elite Athletes and Major Events
The lead bodies of sport are currently reviewing the provision of Sport Massage in the build-up to 2012 Olympics. At the present time no decision has been made about acceptable levels of training and qualification required by therapists. ISRM is fully confident that it can demonstrate the highest level of training in this sector and will be considered very favourably.
