British League team secure League status after 3rd match at Eton. Although we only came 6th this was a brilliant result and should ensure we remain in this division next year. (not yet mathematically certain, as they say). Despite the absence of regular top performers like Jermaine, Conrad and Gary we finished only 35 points off 1st place. Many fine performances including some PBs were rounded off when the sprint relay team won, clipping almost a whole second off the club record. Many congratulations to Ken and the team!
Full report:
Another mini bus journey and no Jermaine Mays, nor Conrad Williams. So certainly we didn’t expect to sweep all before us but our other star, Jeffrey Lawal Balogun performed excellently with two ‘A’ string seconds in the 100m and 200m and then John Browne did even better in the ‘B’ string, winning the 200m convincingly.
HCA Andrew Pickett volunteered for the ‘A’ string double of 800m and 1500m allowing Andrew Dunwoody to pick up some good points in the ‘B’ string double. Another HCA, sixteen year old Lee Hamilton had a good day running a PB in the ‘B’ string 400m hurdles and winning the ‘B’ string sprint hurdles in a UK season’s best for an Under 17 and James Connor continued to impress with another great run in the steeplechase.
As the conditions were hot and fine there were some good performances in the field with another HCA, Daniel Gamester throwing the hammer out to 44m33 – our best performance in this event since the mid nineties. Matthew Burton won the ‘A’ triple jump and was second in the long jump and Joe Appiah was second in the long jump with Rawlston Morian making a rare ‘A’ team appearance, taking a brilliant second in the triple jump. (not bad for an 800m runner!)
It was good to see Howard Frost making a come back in the pole vault and again Jay Thomas was impressive in the shot putt and even Albert Johnson was over twelve meters for the first time this year!
Finally the 4 x 100 m relay team of Paul Egboh, Matthew Wepke, John Browne and Jeffrey Lawal Balogun combined to produce a club record of 41.46 and our first relay win of the season.
Certainly, the general feel was that we had put together a good series of results and whilst we accumulated more points than in the previous match (282 compared to 260), it was disappointing to find that we only managed sixth place, only five points away from fourth.
