Our British League team produced a great start to their 2011 campaign as they claimed an excellent Second place at Barnet Copthall in the first match of the 4 match season. Already they are in the Second tier of league athletics in GB and with two to go up to the Premiership they are on course to ‘live the dream’.
With a team that “was the most imbalanced we’ve ever turned out” the result shows that we genuinely have the necessary talent given that some of our events can be improved considerably in later matches.
We had no less than 3 new recruits making their debut with Emmanuel Ogunjiwmi and Yomi Adeyemi competing well in high class 100m and 200m races. However the young star of the day was 18 year old Josh Brown who produced no less than 3 PB jumps, including a massive 7.24m, in the Long Jump.
The result was set up by good A sting wins from Matt Burton (Long Jump), Jermaine Mays (1500m), James Connor (3000m S/C) and Dominik Sadowski ( Javelin)- who showed great composure as he produced his winning throw in the last round ! Great backing up came from our B string winners, Ben Wiffen (800m), Josh Brown (Long Jump), Lee Hamilton (110mHurdles), John Gilbert (5000m) and Man of the Match Dan Brunsden (Shot and Javelin) who earnt no less than 36 points!
Even in our weaker events “the guys really competed hard and scrapped for points” as they “ earned between 15 and 20 points more than expected” to demonstrate what excellent team spirit this team has.
So it’s all to play for in our next match in London on July 2nd.
