Match Report SAL Saturday 17th June at Tooting

 The third fixture of the season took place on the hottest day of the year so far, seeing temperatures rise to 28 degrees at its peak.  Suffice to say, whether on the track or in the field, the heat was pretty relentless with little shade available to offer respite from the baking summer sun.
 After the first 2 rounds of the season, Kent AC were lying in the 6th/16 spot within the division.  Opponents for this fixture were SLH (who were in 2nd), Holland Sports/DMV/Reigate (5th) and Horsham Blue Star Harriers (8th).
 Kent AC had athletes in most events and proving there is ‘no I in team’ many pitched in to ensure A and B string representation, in order to maximise points.  As a result of the sterling efforts and participation by Kent AC’s men and women athletes, the day closed with a well-earned 2nd place, behind SLH, resulting in moving up to 5th in the league.  Full (provisional) results attached.

Too many great performances to mention all but it would be remiss not to mention a few highlights of the day with some outstanding performances which only served to demonstrate the depth of talent at our disposal:

 Tim Alexander wound back the clock to complete the 800m, 1500m and high jump.  His wife Linda and Kathy Boxsall also showed their hidden desires to be the Jessica Ennis-Hill of SE13 with a number of events on track and field.
  • Stuart Beaney used his experience to win the 5000m B-string, sitting on the shoulder of his main competitor before `sprinting away’ with 800m to go.  Thanks as always Shaun Mulligan, who showcased his array of natural talents across many events from the High Jump and Javelin but to name a few.  Always an impressive points haul from this Ladywell legend of SAL and BAL.
  • Teresa Murphy ran a well-paced 3,000m race to move through the field and finish clear in 3rd place to record an 8 second PB.  Emma-Louise Wagstaff was an great asset to the ladies team, with solid performances in both the 200m and 400m.
  • The women’s performance of the day went to Isabel Bradley, who debuted in the 2,000 steeplechase produced a 2017 top 50 ranking over the barriers. Kent AC dominated the men’s Steeplechase also with Chris Greenwood and Neil Philips winning the A & B string respectively.
  • The final event of the day brought together a collection of waif and strays from the Ladywell Project for the men’s 4x400m finale.  The A-string team purred like the well maintained sports car they are, easily winning the race. The B-string was more like a police line-up, with ideas above their station and discovered even a marathon man can run a 57 second lap when motivated, leading to a B string victory also.

These fixtures offer a great opportunity to try new events and have some fun away from your usual training, which was noticeable by the number of athletes willing to compete without being a scorer across many events. We hope to see the same enthusiasm for the remaining two fixtures on 08/07 in Horsham and Dartford 20/08, so the club enjoy a strong finish to the season.

    A very good result.Very pleasing that both the men and women’s team were so well represented.It ‘s great that there is such an excellent team spirit which I consider to be one of the most admirable aspects of Kent AC.Liked the photos and the informative team report/results.Good luck in the remaining fixtures.
