KENT AC NEWS BULLETIN
8 August 2021

We in south-east London can be especially proud of our homegrown athletes (step forward Alex Yee and Daryll Neita) as well as the Peckham BMXers down the road.
Kent AC’s marathon man Paul Pollock ran for Ireland on the penultimate day in incredibly challenging conditions. He finished the race in 2:27:48: far from a PB, evidently, but given the number of runners who did not finish, he did well to go the distance. In his own words, ‘it all went pear-shaped’ in the second half, an experience we’ve all had to face, but he showed immense strength of character to give it his best shot and pay a generous tribute to his family and support crew in a moving interview at the finish.

HANDICAP & SOCIAL: A TRIUMPH
There were some really impressive times posted on the night, and those who didn’t feel quite up to the running, a great opportunity to meet up and enjoy a few drinks and some grub and talk about triumphs to come. It’s just wonderful to be able to get together after a tricky 18 months of hiatus, isn’t it?
Full results can be found on the website, and juniors’ results are listed below under JUNIOR NEWS, but many congratulations to Dan Pettit and PenelopeTeoh-Shi for coming out on top in this race to the finish.

SOUTHERN ATHLETICS LEAGUE
The timetable can be found at: Southern Athletics League Timetable. Feel free to contact Ian Ellwood or Vic Buck if you have any questions.
Many thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far; you really help keep the sport going.
We are especially short on officials, so if you are able to spare some time to help out then please get in touch below – no experience is necessary to get involved!
We are currently placed 77th out of 97th. This is something we can definitely improve in our last two fixtures. The table is available at Southern Athletics League – 2021.

LICENCE TO THRILL
Ladywell 10000 for 2021 is on
SATURDAY 5 SEPTEMBER
We have managed to secure a race licence, so it’s full steam ahead with planning and preparation for the fourth edition of our own track 10k (that’s 25 times round, to put it brutally).
The event, comprising seven 10000m track races at the home of Kent AC, Ladywell Arena, attracts a huge number of gifted and talented runners, and is a brilliant fitness challenge for the rest of us mortals. There’s also a fantastic party atmosphere, with that holy trinity of runners’ highs: refreshment, music and massage, and it’s a brilliant showcase festival of running for Kent AC.
Volunteering
As well as being a great day for the club, it is also a big fundraiser and we rely on the help from many within the club to make the event happen.
Any help is both needed and greatly appreciated and friends and family are more than welcome to help out too.
You can race and volunteer – many do both each year.
Please complete the following short form to help put the event on: https://forms.gle/3BTQAvNAVNCo9YrT8.
Entries
Entry fee is £13 (all runners must be UKA affiliated).
Qualifying time is sub-55mins 10k / sub 25mins 5k.
Priority entries open on Sunday 8th August 15:00 for Kent AC members only.
General entries for all other athletes and clubs on Tuesday 10th August 09:00.

Please help to spread the word far and wide to anyone who may be interested in competing.
NEW LIFE FOR OLD SHOES
I am arranging an old trainer collection for re:run charity who will reuse them and make new items out of them
(https://rerunclothing.org). They will help us reduce the carbon footprint of running in new trainers and prevent them going to landfill. It takes on average, 11,994 months for a pair of running trainers to decompose.
I will be collecting any old running trainers from the track on Thursday 12th August and Tuesday 17th August.
The charity will then collect them from the track and reuse them.
If anyone has a household like mine, there were plenty of old trainers in the cupboard taking up space that can be better used.
