SAFEGUARDING
Update of safeguarding policies and procedures
The Kent AC Committee agreed this week for the club to adopt new safeguarding policies and procedures in line with a new framework agreed by the sport’s governing bodies. The safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults in sport has been in the spotlight in recent years following a number of high profile cases in which coaches have been convicted of the abuse of children. In addition there is a growing recognition of the wider role of sports organisations in promoting but on occasions harming the emotional, physical and mental well-being of athletes.
Following an independent review, UK Athletics and the four Home Country Athletics Federations (Athletics Northern Ireland, England Athletics, Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics) published new child and adult safeguarding policies in June 2021, along with Codes of Conduct for coaches, athletes, parents, volunteers and others. The full set of documents, which are now also Kent AC policy, are set out here. Please take a look in particular at the codes of conduct which set out what is expected of us all.
A key feature of the policies is that safeguarding and protecting children and vulnerable adults is everyone’s responsibility. The basic advice is that any concerns should be raised with club welfare officers, and that they in turn should contact the UKA Safeguarding Team. Kent AC’s Welfare Officers are Neil Gordon-Orr and Susie Fairbrass, contact here.
