First SAL of the season a great success!

Please find Ian Elwood’s round-up below, along with news of extended opening hours on the track and a memorial message for ex-club member Bill Sanders who sadly passed away recently.
SAL SUCCESS!
The first Southern Athletics League (SAL) of the season was a storming success. Kent won the overall team competition by nearly 60 points.
There were too many great performances to mention them all.
Rhyeime Anderson was 1st in the 200m and 2nd in the 100m and is fast improving. There were so many Kent AC women running in the 100m and 200m it was difficult to know who to chose for the scoring positions. Priscilla Adu-Bobie was second in the 100m and the 200m. Megan Aitchison ran her first 400m for several years and looked amazing when breaking 60 seconds.
Cameron Irwin did several events but the highlight was a 1.70m high jump. Best wishes to Tim Alexander: he got a nasty scrape after fighting with the equipment in the same event. I would like to send my best wishes to Tim who proved his strength by still coming back to run the 800m.
The distance events were dominated by Kent AC with Both Chris Busaleih and Cameron Dockeril lapping the field to take 1st place in the A and B races in 15.39 and 15.40. The women’s 3000m was similar with Sarah Hanley and Katie Rowland easing to victory. Rob Sesseman debuted in the 1500 winning in 4.08 closely followed by George Russel who won the B race in 4.16.
Special mention goes to Ellie Hepple who had to be talked out of attempting the pole vault but managed 20.04 (A club record in the 100m hurdles) while also managing a very impressive long jump, triple jump and relay leg.
Many thanks also to all the officials and volunteers who turned out to help particularly Rob Moye and Kehinde who helped to pull everything together.
Next fixture is the 12th of June in Battersea, look forward to seeing you all there!

VALE BILL SANDERS
Some of the older Kent AC members will remember the name Bill Samuels who has sadly passed away at the age of 76 after suffering from Parkinson’s disease. He was mainly a mid to long distance runner.
He was a member of the club in the mid to late 1980’s before a work promotion took him away to the Peterborough area.
Bill was in fact the main reason that I joined Kent AC. Back in the pre internet days of 1986 I moved from west to SE London but couldn’t find a local running club despite living less than a mile from the track.
Bill was my boss at the time (with Merton council) and also lived locally and it was he who told me about Kent AC, so I am indebted to him for introducing me to the club.
I’m sure he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
