THE SOUTH ATHLETICS LEAGUE (SAL) IS BACK!
For those of you not familiar with the SAL, this is a track and field league which ordinarily runs on 6 weekends throughout the spring/summer. There was no 2020 season due to Covid-19. This year they are holding four fixtures, subject to government guidelines on training and competition remaining unchanged.
For 2021 it has changed it to a local league, which has the upside of limited travelling. There will be no promotion or demotion in 2021. The other clubs in our league are:
The SAL fixtures are open to all first claim members for Kent AC aged over 15 on 31 Aug 2020. Second claimers can also compete as long as their first club isn’t in the same league. Only athletes affiliated to England Athletics (or other home countries) will be able to compete. There is no minimum standard and everyone is welcome. If you are one of our two quickest entrants at the event you will be scoring for the club, otherwise you will run/throw/jump as a non-scorer.
The dates and locations of the 2021 fixtures are as follows. All fixtures take place from late morning through to late afternoon:
Putting on these events requires several volunteers from each participating club. If anyone is interesting in helping out please let Ian Ellwood know, it would be great to see some new faces this year. No experience is necessary, there will be experienced officials there to show you what to do, but qualified officials are particularly welcome as it helps with point scoring!
SAVE THE DATES
Club Champs are back on for 2021. Provisional dates and events:

Thursday 15th July – Sprints, 800m

TASTER DAY ROUND-UP WITH IAN
The junior taster day took place last weekend and we were delighted to hear it was a great success.
We caught up with hurdling-hero and men’s SAL captain, Ian Ellwood, who did a fantastic job of helping organise the day.
What was your involvement in organising the taster day?
I helped to co-ordinate and recruit the volunteers as well as contributing ideas to how we would deliver the day.
Was the day a success?
It was great to see so many people at the gate waiting to come in. We even had people who hadn’t registered turn up so there is clearly a huge demand.
The day was great and a very enjoyable experience.
Which events did the juniors appear to enjoy most?
It was a real mix and all events had got a good response. Seeing the different groups run around the 400m really built some atmosphere up and there was lots of cheering and support.
I was impressed by how some of the more technical aspects were delivered. It was great watching people improve as they developed their technique on both the high jump and the javelin.
What’s next for junior athletics in the club?
In June we hope to welcome lots of new juniors to the club. Some had already joined in advance of the taster day which was great to see.
How can our members support the junior recruitment?
With new members we will need more volunteers. If anybody is interested I helping out on a Tuesday night please /">get in touch. We particularly need people with any experience in field events.
