An important message to our members
KENT AC NEWS BULLETIN
13 February 2022
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL TRACK USERS
Members might have heard that last Tuesday there was a near collision at the track and one of our athletes was injured.
Firstly, we wish her a speedy recovery and hope it won’t be a deterrent to her future athletics career with us.
Secondly, the committee are taking this very seriously and we as a club must do all we can to ensure something like this does not recur.
Thirdly, it has made us think seriously about how the track is used, especially on a Tuesday, and how this can be done in a way that is safe, fair, effective and enjoyable.
It’s fantastic to see so many of our members out training together, however we must respect others
and always put safety of our members as a priority.
IMPORTANT: Please ensure you follow track etiquette at all times.
TRACK ETTIQUETE:
Distance groups
All to leave track straight onto the infield (not outer lanes) after each rep.
Only start your rep when there is space to do so – those on the track have right of way
All groups to walk/jog on the infield – on the grass. Must not use the outer lanes.
Captains make sure their athletes regroup before the next rep and set off together.
Once overtaken, athletes to move into lane 1 immediately.
No warming up or cooling down on the track (where this can be safely avoided).
Note, lanes 1 – 2 available (lane 3 overtaking only).
Use lanes 4, 5, 6 (7 & 8 on home straight) when distance group present.
Hurdles and equipment should be kept in outer 2 lanes.
Further review:
The committee are currently discussing further improvements to track training to manage congestion. This could include some of the following:
A more systematic induction process, so first timers/’try-outers’ will be briefed on track etiquette before using the track.
Reducing the numbers of groups on the track at any one time and, if necessary, the number of people in the larger groups.
Communicating clearer and stricter start and finish times for groups.
A rota whereby one or more group trains away from the track.
Moving some sessions to Thursday.
Better coordination between coaches and prior notice to everybody of who is doing what where and when.
In the meantime please be considerate of others at the track and follow the guidelines above.
